William P. Mangum family papers, 1862-1879.

The collection consists of letters, poems or song ballads, promissory notes and genealogy. The letters are mainly from William P. Mangum to his wife, Louisiana Caroline Catlett as his company moved from place to place during the Civil War. He was in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. He describes food, health, clothing, news of the fighting, and fellow soldiers. In a letter dated May 6, 1863 from Vicksburg, he states, "our rigment has never bin in a battle yet...." By June 4, 1864 from Marietta he says, "...we have bin fighting a bout 28 days... this has bin a awful time...." In September 1864 he is in a hospital in Forsyth, Georgia. in his last letter on April 3, 1864 from Camp Wright near Macon, he says, "...we are badly whiped...." Also included are poems/song ballads which Mangum sent to his wife, letters from the Catlett family, Pearce family genealogy, and promissory notes for money Mangum borrowed for his farming in Hall County and Jackson County, Georgia.

William P. Mangum was born in Georgia around 1836 and married Louisiana Caroline Catlett (b. 1837?) in Jackson County, Georgia in 1857.
